ORACLE RIDGE - CODY TRAIL - AZ TRAIL

Level: Intermediate (3-C)

Description: The Oracle area offers several wonderful rides. Miles of single track, lots of jeep roads, wonderful scenery, cool temperatures, and not a terribly long drive from Tucson. The map shows two possible loops. One (red) takes you from the Arizona Trail parking area, up Mt. Lemon Control Road to to Triangle Y Camp then on Forest Service Road 639 to the Oracle Ridge Trail, across on the trail to Cody Trail, down that to The Arizona Trail and back to the parking area. The first mile is easy, the next 2.5 are not technical but they are VERY DIFFICULT physically as there is a lot of climbing (check the profile). After you reach the Oracle Ridge Trail you are on single track for the rest of the ride. The downhill has some severe switch backs but is really a lot of fun. A nickname for the Arizona Trail in this section is "sweetness" and you will see why when you get to it.

The second loop (blue) starts the same but instead of turning onto the Cody Trail off of the Oracle Ridge Trail you would just continue down the Oracle Ridge Trail until you reach Cody Loop Road. Take the road back to the parking area. The second profile shows the ride from the intersection of Oracle Ridge Trail and Cody Trail.

Directions: From Ina and Oracle go north toward the town of Oracle. Turn where the sign says Oracle Business District (American Ave.), follow this until you get to Mt. Lemmon Control Road, take that to Arizona Trail Head Parking which will be on your right about 30 miles from Ina and Oracle.

Get on your bike and head up the control road until you reach the sign for Triangle Y Camp. This is also FS road 639 which you will stay on until you read the Oracle Ridge Trail. Along 639 you will find many options to turn off on other Forest Service Roads. Don't. The last couple of miles up 639 are pretty tough physically. I need to walk some parts just because I run out of air. It is not technically hard. You will not have any trouble telling when you reach the Oracle Ridge Trail, turn right and take it to the Cody Trail (nice sign at the intersection) and follow that single track back to the parking. Have a ball, this is a fun ride.
